Transforming your career aspirations into a reality can be a daunting journey. In 2015, I embarked on this very path, driven by a fervent desire to dive headfirst into the dynamic world of technology. However, like many, I found myself lacking the formal qualifications required to capture the attention of prospective employers. Back then, opportunities for apprenticeships were as rare as hen’s teeth.

Balancing the demands of a full-time job, the responsibilities of rent, financial prudence, and envisioning a future with my then-girlfriend, who is now my wife, pursuing full-time education was simply not an option. Undeterred, I opted for the part-time route to acquire the essential qualifications that would make tech companies take notice of my application. Yet, this path stretched over a period of three years!

I was accepted into an ‘earn as you learn’ program with a forward-thinking company in Belfast. This opportunity was transformative, as it allowed me to continue my education while gaining invaluable practical experience. Over the course of four years, I not only earned a degree but, more importantly, garnered insights and skills that exceeded what traditional university settings could offer. On-the-job training, I would argue, far surpasses the classroom experience in the tech industry.

Throughout my tenure with that company, I took the initiative to organise and lead technical workshops, recognising the importance of hands-on learning. This experience ignited a passion for creating a collaborative learning community within the organisation, fostering a more structured approach to knowledge sharing and skill development.

Since my departure, I’ve been driven by the desire to carry forward the culture of learning and the spirit of community that I helped cultivate. I want to channel my focus and determination into helping individuals like you forge a successful career in IT without the need for arduous hoops to jump through.
